My Uncle Jules Adapted from (French) Guy de Maupassant Sun Yufan (Adaptation) Pang Bangben (Illustrations)

1 有一个胡须皆白的穷老头，向我们讨钱。我给了他一个五法郎的银币。这使我的同伴很为吃惊，我就向他谈起了一件我永生难以忘怀的童年往事。
1 A white-hearded old man begged us for money, so I gave him a five-franc silver coin. Noticing my companion’s surprised look, I told him a childhood story that I will never forget.

2 那时我家住在哈佛尔市。父亲当个职员，工作很辛苦，但挣不了多少钱，家境很拮据。母亲责备他时，他总是张开了手扶一下额头，好象要抹去一颗根本不存在的汗珠，一句也不回答。
2 Back then, my family lived in Le Havre. My father was a clerk, worked very hard, but earned very little. The family was financially strapped. When my mother reproached him, he would always pass his open hand over his forehead, as if to wipe away a drop of non-existent sweat, and he would answer nothing.

3 家里样样省吃俭用，买什么都要挑处理货。连买十五个铜子一公尺的花边，也要讨论半天。母亲总是烦恼，常常找一些尖酸的话，一些藏头露尾的刻毒的话发泄在父亲的身上。
3 We saved on everything. All our food was bought at bargain sales. Long discussions would arise on the price of a piece of braid worth fifteen centimes a meter. My mother often worried, and she often found some bitter and sarcastic words, some malicious words full of hidden venom, to vent on my father.(notes: 公尺(gongchi)=100 centimeters in China. In the original text, the unit is yards, but in this lianhuanhua adaptation, it was adapted to 公尺.)

4 我的大姐那年是二十八岁二姐二十六岁。她们都没有出嫁，这是全家十分发愁的事。
4 That year, my eldest sister was twenty-eight, and my second sister was twenty-six. Neither of them was married yet, which worried the entire family.

5 如果我丢了一颗钮扣，撕破了裤子，全家都要对我大吵大嚷。
5 Whenever I lost a button or tore my trousers, the entire family would make a big fuss and yell loudly at me.

6 每个星期天，全家忙得不亦乐乎。母亲和姐姐们穿红戴绿，打扮得就象节日的船只。父亲的礼服又用汽油擦去了污垢，浑身散发出汽油味来，使我一闻到这种气味，就知道又到了星期天。
6 Every Sunday, our home was a flurry of activity. My mother and sisters dressed up in vibrant colors, beribboned like festive boats. My father’s frock coat would be wiped clean with benzine, leaving him reeking of it; whenever I smelled that odor, I knew Sunday had come again.
