一、李長寬，同所有的孩子一樣，原是一個純潔、可愛的孩子。解放前，父親在南京鐵路上做工，因家窮沒錢上學，使他每天游蕩街頭，和小流氓們混在一起，打架、鬧事；有空就看些荒淫、神怪的小人書，竟像着了迷似的整天坐在“小人書”攤上。
1. Li Changkuan, like all children, was originally a pure and adorable child. Before liberation, his father worked on the Nanjing Railway. Because his family was too poor to send him to school, Li Changkuan wandered the streets everyday with petty hooligans, fighting and causing trouble. Whenever he had time, he would read licentious and supernatural xiaorenshu, so mesmerized sitting at the “xiaorenshu” bookstall all day long.

二、可是有時他弄不到一文錢，不能租書看；但“小人書”中的飛仙、劍俠、鏢客、大王的“豪爽之氣”和他們那姦淫婦女的“風流”艷事，緊緊地吸引着他。他只好站在别人的背後閱覽。
2. But sometimes he could not scrape even a penny to rent books to read. Yet the “bold spirit” of the flying immortals, swordsmen, guards and bandit chiefs and the romantic tales of seducing women in those “xiaorenshu” attracted him closely. He could only read over other people’s shoulders.

三、解放後，家庭生活得到了改善，李長寬進了學校；但往日的愛好，仍然使他迷戀着小人書攤。他幼小的心靈裹，已深深染上了“行俠打刼”、“姦婦誘女”的“侠客氣慨”。所以便聚夥打架，偷農民的瓜，還經常欺侮女同學。認為這就是“英雄好漢”。
3. After liberation, family living conditions improved, and Li Changkuan went to school. However, his former habit still drew him obsessively to the xiaorenshu bookstalls. His childish heart was already deeply tainted with the “chivalrous spirit” of “robbing the rich and plundering” and “seducing and raping women.” So he gathered companions to fight, stole melons from farmers, and often bullied female classmates, believing this to be the behavior of a “true brave hero.”

四、由於他對盜匪、鏢客的嚮往，始終無心唸書，經常曠課，在校外亂搞亂鬧；這時李長寬的父親，因廠裹工作忙而不常在家，母親又對孩子弱愛，總是瞞着父親，所以就更慫恿了他壞行為的發展。
4. Because of his longing for bandits and guards, he never had his mind on studying, often skipped classes, and stirred up chaos outside school. At the time, his father was too busy with work at the factory to be home often, and his mother doted excessively on the child, always hiding things from the father, so his bad behavior developed further.

五、老師也經常教育他，但認為他只是有些顽皮，不大好管；却對他的迷戀壞小人書和在校外的胡鬧情况，不够了解；所以用一般道理，對他進行教育，總得不到應有的效果。
5. His teacher also often disciplined him, but thought that he was just somewhat mischievous and difficult to handle. The teacher did not fully grasp his obsession with bad xiaorenshu and the trouble he was stirring outside school. Therefore, the teacher used general moral lessons to discipline him, yet never achieved the desired effect.

六、就這樣一天天的過去了。到升入四年級的時候，不少同他一起看“小人書”和聚夥打架的“小侠客”們，在學校的教育與少先隊的辅導下，都慢慢入隊了。星期六，同學們都去過隊日，只剩下他孤零零的一个人；這時，他開始感到孤獨，他想和大夥在一起，他想入隊了。
6. Days passed like this. When he advanced to the fourth grade, educated by the school and guided by the Young Pioneers, many of the little “swordsmen” who had read “xiaorenshu” and who had ganged up to fight with him gradually joined the Young Pioneers. On Saturdays, classmates all attended team activities, leaving him alone. At this point, he began to feel lonely and he wanted to be with everyone and join the Young Pioneers.

七、孤獨、痛苦的心情，使他終日悶悶不樂；後經老師和同學們幫助，他說出了自己入隊的願望，大家都為了他的要求進步而高興，給了他很大鼓勵。他決心入隊了，從此，不再曠課，上課時也能專心聽講，連晚上都在家裡溫習功課。
7. A mood of loneliness and pain left him gloomy all day. Later, with the help of his teacher and his classmates, he expressed his wish to join Young Pioneers. Everyone was happy for his determination to improve and gave him great encouragement. He resolved to join, and from then on, no longer skipped classes, listened attentively in lessons, and even reviewed homework at home in the evenings.

八、可是每每經過舊書攤，還總想進去看看，“哪怕只看一本呢！”他這樣想着，但改正錯误和入隊的决心，鼓舞着他，戰勝了这種想法，他再也不進去了。
8. But every time he passed the old bookstalls, he still wanted to go inside and have a look. “Just one book!” he thought. However, his determination to correct his mistakes and join the organization inspired him to overcome this urge. He never went there again.

十、正當他决心做一個好學生、好隊員的時候，却又交上了一個壞蛋朋友，這個“朋友”就是看門的王友才，他原是國民黨和日偽時期的水手、船長，是一個荒淫無恥的大流氓，解放後，改頭換面，混進了學校。經常借講故事為名給孩子們说他過去那腐朽、糜爛的生活，說怎麼“花大堆錢”、怎麼“玩女人”等等，這些東西正引起了李長宽的回憶，使他又沉溺於“小人書”中。
10. He resolved to be a good student and a good Young Pioneer. However, he also became friends with a bad guy. This “friend” was a doorman, Wang Youcai. At the time of the Guomindang and Japanese puppet government, he had been a sailor and captain and a licentious and shameless hooligan. After Liberation, he changed his appearance and infiltrated the school. Under the pretext of telling stories, he often recounted to the children his past decayed and decadent life, about how he “spent piles of money,” how he “toyed with women,” and so on. These things triggered Li Changkuan’s old memories and caused him to indulge once again in “xiaorenshu.”

十一、後來他想：“能‘大堆花錢’、‘玩女人’，不正是“小人書’中所說的‘豪爽’和“風流”吗！？”他簡直聽得入迷，連下課的十分鐘也跑去聽“故事”。壞思想，從此又重新抬了頭。他乾脆連隊日也不過了，整天和王友才偎在一起，老師和同学批評他，他彷彿全沒聽見，只有王友才和“小人書”中所說的“故事”，深深地迷惑着他。

Later, he thought: “Being able to ‘spend piles of money’ and ‘toy with women’, isn’t that exactly what the ‘xiaorenshu’ call being ‘bold and generous’ and ‘romantic’?” He was utterly fascinated, even rushing to listen to these “stories” during the ten-minute breaks between classes. Bad thoughts, from then on, rose up again. He even stopped participating in the Young Pioneer Days and spent all his time huddled together with Wang Youcai. When teachers and classmates criticized him, he acted as if he had heard nothing at all. Only Wang Youcai and the “stories” described in the “xiaorenshu” deeply bewitched him.

13. Sure enough, one day, while his classmates were all outside on the schoolyard, he quietly slipped into the classroom and tried to put a white and shiny brass ink box into his pocket. But this first attempt of theft caused him a fierce moral conflict, and he hesitated. Yet for the sake of food and clothing, for money, for living like Wang Youcai and the people in the “xiaorenshu,” in the end, he finally stole the box. From then on, stealing became a habit for him, stealing, one after another, fountain pens, books, and money…

14. He was discovered only when he stole the money his classmates had collected to subscribe to the “Young People’s Newspaper”; by then, he had already stolen more than ten times. When pairs of reproachful eyes stared at him, sustained by his degenerate and stubborn thinking, he felt no shame at all; instead, he “self-righteously” defended his disgraceful behavior.

十五、老師仍舊是那樣耐心地教育他，指出了他錯誤的嚴重性，但他並不理睬。學校通知了家長；父親知道這一系列的事實以後，嚴加斥责，但他感覺学校、家庭都給自己為難，只有王友才順自己的心願。
15. The teacher still patiently educated him as before, pointing out the seriousness of his mistakes, but he paid no attention. The school notified his parents. After learning about all this, his father sternly reprimanded him. Yet he felt that both the school and his family were making things difficult for him; only Wang Youcai followed his wishes.

十六、學校和少先隊，再三給他談話，却毫無悔改，一心迷戀着他所嚮往的生活。最後少先隊只得開除他的隊籍，學校停止了他的學籍。一個人頹喪地走出了学校。
16. The school and the Young Pioneers talked with him again and again, but he showed no remorse. He remained obsessed with the life he longed for. In the end, the Young Pioneers expelled him from the organization, and the school terminated his enrollment. He walked out of the school, alone and dejected.

十七、停止學籍期間，更加“無拘無束”，變本加厲起來，直到復學。他的班主任王老師感到不能只用處罰來向他進行教育，便替他還债，給他講述前進的方向和壞書及王友才所說事情的毒害，並且講很多英雄模範故事，對他進行啟發，他慢慢有些轉變了。一次王老師特别給他一本“空軍英雄故事”，讓他仔細閱讀。
17. During the suspension of his school status, he became all the more “unrestrained,” until he was readmitted. His class teacher, Ms. Wang, felt punishment alone could not educate him, so she paid back his debts, explained to him the right path forward, as well as the poison of the bad books and of what Wang Youcai had told him. She also told many stories of heroic role models to inspire him, and he slowly began to change. Once, Ms. Wang specially gave him a book, Stories of Air Force Heroes, and asked him to read it carefully.

18. Li Changkuan was deeply moved by Ms. Wang’s manifold help and education. In particular, after reading the Stories of Air Force Heroes, he seemed to understand what a real hero truly was. So when he returned the book to the teacher, he said excitedly: “Ms. Wang, from now on I will study hard, I want to be like the Air Force heroes. …”

19. However, Wang Youcai, this vile and shameless guy, would not spare any child who might be deceived. When he saw that after returning to school, Li Changkuan went to Ms. Wang for extra lessons every day and no longer came to him, he set his sights on him. One evening, under the pretext of giving Li Changkuan something “fun,” Wang Youcai lured him into his room, and that very night he inhumanely sodomized him.

20. From then on, Li Changkuan became somewhat afraid of Wang Youcai, and always avoided him; but Wang Youcai, whenever he had the chance, molested him. As time passed, the child changed, growing pale and thin; when Ms. Wang asked him about it, he only lowered his head shyly, not saying a word. Later, the truth was finally discovered, and Wang Youcai, this beast, was arrested amid the united accusations and condemnations of the entire school’s teachers and pupils.

Although Wang Youcai was arrested, the poison he had spread had taken root in Li Changkuan’s heart, and his obscene and irrational thoughts grew more and more serious; every day he seemed absent-minded, lost in wild fantasies. In class he could no longer concentrate on the lessons, and even imagined molesting his female classmates like Wang Youcai and the characters in the “xiaorenshu” had done.

In this muddled and confused state, he barely managed to graduate, but every day, he still thought about “making big money” and “toying with women,” living a life of debauchery; as a result, he neglected his studies and failed to enter middle school. Then he began stealing money from home, gambling, and mixing with hooligans to talk about women. “Xiaorenshu” no longer satisfied him, and he often read obscene novels to gratify his sexual desires.

24. Time went on, and Li Changkuan was always without money and without a school to attend. His family was so “cold-blooded” toward him that he began to feel hopeless, thinking to himself that there was no chance for him to live a life like Wang Youcai nor a life as described in the “xiaorenshu”. As a result, he sank into an abyss of distress and anguish.

二十五、正當他“走頭無路”的時候，原來賭友中的反革命分子陳鼎禮看透了他的心事，便給他指出“前途”——參加反革命組織。開始他不敢，他猶豫，但“大錢”“高官”的誘騙，打中了李長寬的要害，他認為找到了“生活”的出路，竟然参加了反革命組織。

Just when he had reached this “dead end,” Chen Dingli, a counterrevolutionary element from among his former gambling buddies, saw what was weighing on his mind and pointed out a “future path” for him—joining the counterrevolutionary organization. At first, he did not dare and hesitated, but the deception of “big money” and “high office” hit Li Changkuan’s weak points. Believing he had found a way forward to a “life,” he actually joined the counterrevolutionaries.

In order to gain the trust of the counterrevolutionary organization and reach the goal of his “ideal” life, he obeyed Chen Dingli’s orders to cut power cables, gather intelligence, and even assassinate people’s militiamen and seize firearms, committing a series of counterrevolutionary evil activities.

二十七、他自以為真的找到了“升官、發财、過好生活”的門路，可是就在這個時候，陳鼎禮等一夥反革命分子，全部被捕了，十六歲的李長宽，也同時被押上了人民法庭，受到了人民的裁判。由於他是從犯，並且坦白較好，所以只判他“管教”四年，送去勞動改造。
27. He lived in the misbelief that he had truly found the way to “getting promoted, getting rich, and living a good life.” But right at this moment, Chen Dingli and his gang of counterrevolutionary elements were all arrested. Sixteen-year-old Li Changkuan was simultaneously brought before the People’s Court and subjected to the judgment of the people. Because he was an accomplice to a crime, and was relatively forthcoming in his confession, he was only sentenced to four years of “correction” by way of reeducation through labor.

28. Having now gone through education through labor, his frail body had gradually become healthy, and his thoughts had become equally healthy. He began to realize with remorse what had made him forget that he was the son of the working class, and what had misled him onto the counterrevolutionary path. He now often thinks of these issues and feels a deep-seated hatred for those preposterous and obscene books, and for the rotten and degenerate poison of bourgeois ideology the likes of Wang Youcai. He is resolved to reform himself through labor and return among the ranks of the working class.

一、周真森家住漢口自治一街，他小時候上學非常努力，功課很好，是一個十分可愛的孩子。
1. Zhou Zhensen’s family lived on the First Street in the Hankou Autonomy. When he was young, he studied very hard at school, his schoolwork was very good, and he was an overall very adorable child.

二、解放前，他原住在五彩三巷，那裏有很多舊書攤，他每天上學下學，總見書攤上圍着很多孩子；這一誘人的現象，引起了他的好奇心，於是他也看了起來。一本、兩本，一次、兩次，慢慢地被那“隱身變幻”、“口吐飛剑”的“魔法”“劍術”所深深迷惑，竟連續看了一千多本。
2. Before Liberation, he originally lived in Wucai Third Alley, where there were many old book stalls. Every day going to and from school, he saw many children gathered around the book stalls; this captivating phenomenon aroused his curiosity, and so he also started reading. One book, two books; once, twice — slowly, he was deeply bewitched by all the “magic” and “swordmanship” of “invisibility and transformation” and “spitting flying swords from the mouth”, going as far as reading over a thousand books one after the other.

3. From then on, those preposterous and illusory evil doctrines took root in his immature mind. All day long, he longed for the “superhuman magic” of “sorcerers” and “swordsmen”; and for the “gallant spirit” of “armed guards” and “bandit chiefs”. After Liberation, he also frequently gathered a crowd to fight and bullied younger schoolmates, believing that this was the “heroic spirit” spoken of in those bad books.

四、到他十六歲的時候，進了省立三中（現改為市九中），隨着他年齡的增長，那些“飛簷走壁”“搶山劫寨”的“飛仙”“劍俠”，已不能滿足他的要求，他開始偷看淫穢的色情書籍了，極度荒誕、糜爛的生活，使他入了迷。這時他不僅嚮往着“魔法”“劍術”，而且又希望着金錢、美女……能像國民黨軍官和美國紳士一樣，花天酒地的生活。
4. When he was 16, he entered the Province’s Third Middle School (now the Ninth Municipal Middle School). As he grew older, these “flying saints” and “chivalrous swordsmen” “leaping onto roofs and vaulting over walls” and “looting the mountains and robbing the fortresses” could no longer satisfy his demands, so he began to secretly read obscene pornographic books. He was enchanted by these extremely absurd and decaying lives. At the time, he was not only yearning for “occult swordsmanship”, but also coveting money and beautiful women… so he could, like a GMD officer or an American gentleman, lead a life of debauchery.

五、淫亂、糜爛的生活，需要大堆錢財，他弄不到錢，就偷盜[3] 别人的東西。偷盜的犯罪行為，開始使他害怕、恐懼，他恨自己沒有“小人書”中所説的“隱身法術”。但是為了錢，他終於不顧一切地偷了，而且一次再次地偷成了習慣。
5. This promiscuous and decaying life required a big amount of money. As he did not have any money, he stole things from other people. In the beginning, the illegal conduct of stealing caused him fear and horror, and he regretted he did not master the “invisibility techniques” from the “xiaorenshu”. But for the money, in the end, he stole regardlessly, and with each time he got more used to it.

12. One day, he stayed home alone after everyone had left for a meeting. He was lost in his licentious and decaying thoughts, and using the opportunity that no one was home, he inhumanely raped a young girl of 14 years. That’s how an 18-year-old child became a criminal guilty of raping a young girl and attempting to flee across the border and was thus locked up in prison.

周真森的母親沉痛地說：“反動、淫穢、荒誕的圖書害了我的兒子，使他在年輕的時候就犯了罪！為了再不讓這些壞書繼續毒害更多父母們的兒女，我要求政府一定要把反動、淫穢、荒誕這些殺人不見血的壞書，堅决處理！”
In deep sorrow, Zhou Zhensen’s mother said: “Reactionary, obscene and absurd books have spoilt my son, have made him commit a crime while so young! To prevent these bad books from continuing to poison the sons and daughters of even more mothers and fathers, I demand that the government adamantly dispose of these reactionary, obscene and absurd bad books that kill people without shedding blood!”

道本連環畫，包括兩個故事，⼀是“⻘年李⻑寬的壁落”⼀是“周眞森怎樣⾛上犯罪道路的”。故事分別描寫了兩個孩⼦，因在舊社會迷戀反動、淫穢、荒誕的⿈⾊書籍，⽽使思想深受毒害，最後，竟⾛上荒淫無恥的腐朽⽣活道路甚⾄被反⾰命分⼦利⽤。通過他們的不同經歷，充分揭露了反動、深穢、荒誕的⿈⾊書籍的罪惡實質。
This lianhuanhua includes two stories. One is “The Degeneration of Young Li Changkuan,” and the other is “How Zhou Zhensen Embarked on a Path of Crime.” Each story portrays a child who was morally poisoned, because of his obsession with reactionary, obscene, and absurd yellow books from old society. In the end, they embarked on a decadent lifepath of licentiousness and shamelessness, and counterrevolutionary elements even took advantage of them. Through their different experiences, this lianhuanhua thoroughly exposes the evil nature of reactionary, licentious, and absurd yellow books.
