 狂人日记  Diary of a Madman

 某君兄弟，是我中学时同学，多年不见了。听说那位弟弟有病，我顺便去望他。在他家门口遇到一个人，自称系病者的长兄。后来，他给了我两册日记，上题《狂人日记》四字，内容荒唐杂乱：

 For years, I hadn’t seen the two brothers who had been my classmates during middle school. When I heard the younger brother had fallen ill, I went to pay him a visit. At the door to his home, I bumped into a person who claimed to be the elder brother of the patient. Later, he handed me two volumes of a diary, with the four words “Diary of a Madman” written on them. Their contents were absurd and chaotic:

•  1. 今天晚上，月光很好。我今天才觉得，那些年全是发昏。是啊！得十分小心。那赵家的狗，为啥看我两眼呢？我怕得有理。
•  1. Tonight, the moon shines brightly. I realized only today that all these years it had been clouded. Really! Have to be extremely cautious. That dog of the Zhaos, why is it glancing at me with its two eyes? I have good reason to be afraid.

•  2. 早上小心出门，赵贵翁的眼色很怪：似乎想害我。还有些人交头接耳在议论我。我浑身发冷了。他们为什么要跟我作对？难道为了我以前踹过一脚古久先生的陈年流水簿子？
•  2. When I went out in the morning, carefully, Old Zhao’s gaze was very weird: as if he wanted to harm me. And then there were these people whispering something about me. I froze from head to toe. What is it they have against me? Can it be that it is that I had earlier kicked Mr. Gu Jiu’s archaic, timeworn daybook?

•  3. 晚上睡不着，那些凶恶的脸色老是在眼前出现。幸亏陈老五拖我回家！可是家里人都象不认识我似的，把我锁进书房。怎么回事呢？我翻开历史一查，见每页都写着“仁义道德”几个字，仔细一看，字缝里都写着“吃人”！
•  3. Tonight, I couldn’t sleep. Those vicious faces kept appearing before my eyes. Luckily, Chen Laowu dragged me home! But no one in my family seemed to recognize me and locked me into the study. Why that? I opened a historical book and began to read, recognizing the words “Virtue and Morality” written on each single page. What more, when I looked closer, I realized that in between, it was written: “eat people”!

•  4. 早上，我静坐了一会。门开了，我大哥带来一个老头子，他满眼凶光，从眼镜边射向我。他们口头上说是给我治病，怕是要合伙吃掉我吧！那人对大哥悄悄说：“赶紧吃吧！”大哥点点头。
•  4. In the morning, I sat quiet for a while. The door opened and my elder brother came in with an old man, his eyes all ominous, looking at me across his spectacles. They said they wanted to cure me, but I feared they were conspiring to eat me up! In secret, that person whispered to my brother: “Eat quickly!” My brother nodded.

•  5. 这几天我想得很多。我大哥讲书说道理的时候，不但嘴唇边沾满了人油，而且心里也装满了吃人的意思。
•  5. These days, I’ve been thinking a lot. When my brother teaches the books and explains morality, his mouth is oozing with human lard and his heart is filled with thoughts about eating people.

•  6. 黑漆漆的，赵家的狗又叫起来了。狮子似的凶心，免子的怯弱，狐狸的狡猾，……
•  6. Pitch dark, and the Zhao’s dog begins to bark again. As ominous like a lion, cowardly like a rabbit, gnawing on bones like a fox…

•  7. 我诅咒吃人的人，先从大哥起头；要劝转吃人的人，也先从他下手。
•  7. To curse those people that eat people, I have to start with my brother, and if I were to persuade those who eat people to change their ways, I should also start with him.
