(40) Bethune showed meticulous care and concern for the wounded and sick, yet he Bethune himself embraced austere living without complaint and without asking for anything in return. He resided in a civilian house, lit by an oil lamp, ate millet and black beans, and wore coarse military uniforms of the Eighth Route Army.
